Volunteers shine a light on Toowoomba Hospice

Laing O’Rourke’s project team Support The Toowoomba Hospice

Laing O’Rourke’s project team on the Cobb & Co Museum in Toowoomba will down tools on Friday, November 27 and head to the Toowoomba Hospice where they will light up the outdoor barbecue area.

The nine-strong team will take a volunteer leave day, an initiative recently introduced within the multinational construction company, to install general lighting so that hospice patients and their families can enjoy al fresco dining during Christmas and the summer months.

According to Laing O’Rourke’s Site Manager Stephen Hickey, the day is all about giving something back to the local community.

“The Toowoomba Hospice provides palliative care to people living in and around the area,” Stephen said.

“The Hospice is completely self funded and we thought that they could use our help. It’s our way of saying thank you for doing a great job and giving back to a group of people that do so much for our community.’

Lawrie Foster, General Manager of Laing O’Rourke’s Building Group, said the company’s volunteer leave day was one way the company engaged with the local community.

“When working on technically complex, challenging projects, there is a tendency to lose perspective with regards to what is happening beyond the boundaries of the construction site,” Lawrie said.

“Our volunteer leave day is a great way to keep our team, from senior engineers through to our labourers, in touch with the local community where we work.

“It is also a great feeling to be able to give something back to the local community, particularly an organisation like the Toowoomba Hospice who really do a great job looking after the needs of sick and terminally ill people in the local area.”

Photo opportunity: Laing O’Rourke staff will be installing general lighting in the Toowoomba Hospice’s outdoor barbecue area tomorrow, Friday, November 27 from 10am to 1pm. This will be followed by a barbecue for all involved.
